MACRA: QPP, MIPS and APMs
The Quality Payment Program (QPP) is the implementation of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) regulations of 2015. QPP will impact the reimbursements of virtually every practicing physician in the US. QPP has 2 components the Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) andAdvanced Alternative Payment Models (APMs).
QPP brings the various Alternate Payment Models (MSSP, CPC+, ACO etc.) under one roof and, through MIPS, also create significant incentives for Providers to adopt one of the APMs. However, joining an APM does not ensure that Providers will be able to improve their care quality or financial outcomes. To actually improve financial or care quality outcomes requires a well thought out clinical and work flow strategy which, in turn, requires a comprehensive technology platform.
