Dr. Kizer previously was founding President and CEO of the National Quality Forum, as well as Under Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and CEO of the VA Health System, the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system. Dr. Kizer brings significant experience and wisdom from an accomplished academic, public sector, and private business career spanning more than three decades.
Currently, Dr. Kizer serves as Chairman of Medsphere Systems Corporation, a leading commercial provider of subscription-based open source healthcare information technology, as well as Chief Health Care Transformation Officer and Senior Executive Vice President at Atlas Research, LLC, based in Washington, DC. He serves as an advisor to a number of other companies.

Dr. Kizer’s professional experience includes positions in academia and the public and private sectors. In addition to his roles at the NQF and VA, Dr. Kizer has previously served as founding Director of the Institute for Population Health Improvement, UC Davis Health, and a Distinguished Professor in the UC Davis School of Medicine and the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, as well as Director of the California Department of Health Services; and Director of the California Emergency Medical Services Authority.
Dr. Kizer is an honors graduate of Stanford University and UCLA, and the recipient of two honorary doctorates. He is board certified in six medical specialties and/or subspecialties, and has authored over 500 original articles, book chapters and other reports.
He has been selected as one of the ‘100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare’ by Modern Healthcare magazine on several occasions, and his work has been featured in Time, BusinessWeek, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and numerous other magazines, newspapers and national television shows.
